Australian cricket legend Merv Hughes will visit Portland in March for a golf day to help raise funds for new surgical equipment at Portland District Health.

The golf event and dinner will be on Friday March 24 and is the fifth annual charity golf day hosted by PDH.

The first four events have raised a total of $80,000 for vital equipment in the Urgent Care Centre and the redevelopment of various departments including palliative care and cancer units in the sub-acute department.

Proceeds from the 2017 charity golf day will be invested into fundraising for a flexible cystoscope for PDH's urology surgical service.

Hughes played 53 Tests for Australia from 1985-94 and took 212 wickets at an average of 28.38. He has since carved a successful career in media and promotions.

The crowd favourite known for his bristling moustache will interact with all players during the golf game and assist with presentations. He will later speak at the dinner.

Players in the game will have three chances on separate par three holes to win a hole-in-one competition that carries a $20,000 prize to be shared by PDH and the golfer.

The evening will include Hughes, musical entertainment, delicious food, live and silent auctions, raffles and lucky door prizes with drinks available at bar prices.

Organiser Carolyn Malseed said the charity golf day had become a major fund-raising and community event.

We're hoping to again attract strong community support for this great event which is a lot of fun but also an important fund-raiser to provide improved services to the community, Ms Malseed said.

All donations are tax deductible.
