New visiting specialist surgeon Nick Russell is bringing the latest international techniques and a passion for rural health to Portland.

Dr Russell will be visiting Portland District Health two days each fortnight, one for consultations and one for surgery, giving local people access to specialist services close to home.

Although born in Adelaide, Mr Russell holds a long-term passion for rural areas.

I think regional areas are under-serviced and from a professional and family perspective, it's a great place to live and raise a family, he said.

Dr Russell is a specialist qualified orthopaedic surgeon and a fellow of the Royal College of Australasian Surgeons and the Australian Orthopaedic Association.

He has a sub-specialty interest in hip, knee, foot and ankle and extensive experience in managing arthritis, sporting injuries and deformity correction.

After completing his orthopaedic training in Adelaide and the Northern Territory, Dr Russell spent a year in Edinburgh, Scotland to complete extra sub-specialty training in lower limbs.

On returning to Australia in 2016 he spent three months in Warrnambool and then worked as a staff specialist in Adelaide. However, he kept contact with the south-west by visiting as a locum on a regular basis.

We looked at the possibility of moving here permanently and from a family and professional point-of-view we’re delighted to be settling in the area, he said.

I have a long-term commitment to rural and regional health that began many years ago when I was involved with the Flinders University rural health society as a medical student.

Dr Russell spent a year in Mount Gambier and undertook annual placements in Warwick, Queensland as part of the John Flynn Rural Scholarship.

He moved to Warrnambool in January and has started regular visits to PDH as part of South West Orthopaedics.

Dr Russell completed 40 joint replacements during his previous stint in the region. I'm coming across patients I’ve operated on and seeing some great results, which is very gratifying.;

He said that the regular visits to Portland were part of an expanding service to regional centres.

I'm offering the latest technique with proven results of an international standard. Given my training in Australia and internationally, people no longer have to travel to the city to receive this high quality, sub-specialty care, he said.

The other advantage is that because I'm nearby, I'm readily available for continuity of care which will ensure patients receive the best possible care.

Dr Russell said he was impressed with the facilities and staff at PDH. It looks excellent, he said. PDH offers a very good service and it will work very well with what I'm offering.

He will also host clinics in Mt Gambier and will look to draw people from south-east South Australia to the Portland operating suite.
