Portland Lions Club’s `White Lioners’ Murray to Moyne team may have been down on cyclist numbers this year but that hasn’t dampened their fund-raising spirit for Portland District Health.

The riders hope to reach their target of $5000 to help people with urology problems through the purchase of a flexible cystoscope for PDH’s urology surgical service.

This was the 15th years the Lions Club organised the Murray to Moyne team. Coordinator George James said the ride was curtailed but the most important aspect of the event – fundraising – went ahead as normal.

“We’ve already raised about $3500 and we’re still continuing with fundraising particularly with car battery collection so hope to reach our $5000 target,” he said.

The fundraising continues with the Lions Club Murray to Moyne used car battery fund raiser. If you have a used battery Lions can pick it up or they can be dropped at the new Portland Transfer Station. People can contact Mr James on 0418 504 840.

Mr James said because the team was down on numbers they decided not to go to Mildura but did the official ride from Hamilton to Port Fairy. Some of the riders cycled to Hamilton on Saturday and returned the following day.

There were eight riders in this year’s team, less than the usual 20. Mr James said there were many factors leading to the reduction, including a busy schedule around Portland, cancellation of leave at Portland Aluminium and changes to the entry system.

“The whole objective of the event is to raise funds for hospitals and we’ve done really well in that respect,” he added.

The recent PDH annual charity golf day with Merv Hughes raised money for the same cause.

All funds raised by the Lions Club will go directly to PDH and all donations are tax deductable.

People still wanting to support the Portland team can make donations at the Bendigo Bank in Portland. The club would like to thank the community and all sponsors that have already contributed to the event, including Portland IGA, Qube Ports, Budget Forklifts and Mibus Bros.

Thank you to all the amazing riders who have put in an incredible effort on the bike and raising funds for PDH.
